In a season of tough, late inning setbacks, the Wildcats were stung with another heart-breaking loss on Tuesday night at Stetson losing 8-7. The Hatters scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the come-from behind win. All-A-Sun Conference player Jeremy Cruz' based loaded single knocked in two runs for the victory.
Bethune-Cookman led 5-0 in the top of the sixth, then 5-3 after six innings. And the Wildcats went ahead 7-3 in the 7th inning but could not hold on to the leads.
Junior outfielder C. J. Lauriello was 4-4 with a double, home run and two RBI and upped his team-leading batting average to .407.
The Wildcats (24-22) outhit the Hatters (20-24) 12-7 in the game, but Stetson was aided by 11 walks and B-CU pitchers also hit a batter and five pitchers combined to throw over 160 pitches in the loss.
B-CU starter, sophomore LHP Roman Lancara pitched five solid innings allowing two hits and no runs through 5, but walked the first two batters of the sixth inning and was relieved by freshman RHP Andrew Tilka (1-1) took the loss as he got out of a tough jam in the eighth inning but faced four batters in the ninth, walking three of them before senior RHP Arles Rivera gave up Cruz' game-winning single to left field.
Emmanuel Castro was 2-3 with an RBI and Peter O'Brien was 1-3 with 2 RBI for the Wildcats.
B-CU plays next at Jacksonville University Wednesday night, 6:30 p.m. before coming home to host Delaware State in a three-game MEAC series Saturday and Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. See the www.bccathletics.com cover story about B-CU game vs. DSU on ESPNU National TV Saturday, 3 p.m.
