DAYTONA BEACH – Bethune-Cookman University quarterback Matt Johnson says his Wildcat teammates do a good job when it comes to self-policing focus.
The Wildcats are 6-0 and face what many outsiders are considering a trap game, Saturday against a 2-4 North Carolina Central team that just underwent a mid-season coaching change. Throw in last week's huge 14-0 victory over South Carolina State and the possibilities of the next five weeks and distraction could be a factor.
Not so, said the senior quarterback.
“In a family, if one brother steps out of line, the other brothers say 'hey, get back in line''' Johnson said at Wednesday's media luncheon. “If we see someone looking too far ahead, we tell him to stay in the moment and get back where they need to be.”
That's been one of the mantra for the team this season: This week's game is just as important as last week's and it's the only game that matters.
“We celebrated and got over that moment and came back on Sunday saying let's go for 7-0,” Johnson said. “We're preparing for the next moment, not dwelling on the last one.”
Continued success is a huge motivator for the 14th ranked Wildcats right now.
“We're as hungry now as we were the first week,” Johnson said. “That's one thing about us. And we know no one out there is going to lay down for us. We're playing like we're 0-6 trying to get a win.”
Kickoff is set 2 p.m. Saturday in Durham, N.C.
