Updated B-CU 20-game Stats/Scores (11-9, 2-0 MEAC)
"I thought our pitchers threw a lot of strikes today and only walked one batter (in the two games) and that showed our intensity on the mound," said B-CU Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. "We can score runs as a team and we did that today scoring 29 runs in 12 innings. We had good at bats and we need to continue to get better as a team, not only for this weekend, but for the rest of the season. Our pitchers must continue to throw strikes and take command on the mound for us."
B-CU opened the MEAC season with a 11-1 win in game one of the doubleheader over FAMU, winning for the sixth straight time in 2010.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Ryan Durrence home run to center field scoring Juan Perez who doubled. It was Durrence's fifth HR of 2010..
B-CU went ahead 3-0 in the third inning with Juan Perez leading off with a single. Then on a hit and run single to right field by Matt Wright and two Rattlers throwing errors on the play, Perez scored from first base.
Cookman (10-9, 1-0 MEAC) scored two more runs in the fourth inning engineering a steal play with runners on first and second, then scoring a throwing error and a passed ball helped B-CU score two making the count 5-0..
Durrence and Davis Two Home Runs Each Leads Offense
Bethune-Cookman used the long ball to score three runs in the fifth inning with Durrence hitting a tape measure home run to deep left field for his second home run of the game. Two batters later, Jeremy Davis ripped a home run to left center for an 8-0 lead.
Davis hit his second home run of the game in the seventh inning to make the score 11-0. FAMU hit a solo home run in the sixth of reliever Justin Dahl to make the score 11-1.
In MEAC play, a 10-run lead after seven inning or five inning (in a seven-inning game) ends the game.
B-CU Starter LHP Ali Simpson (3-1) earned the win pitching five innings allowing 4 hits, striking out seven and walking none in a solid start for the Wildcats.
GAME TWO - B-CU 18, FAMU 0 - Five Homers - Ryan Gonzalez One-Hitter Lead Win
