AUBURN, Ala. – Early scoring by the Auburn Tigers put the Wildcats in a tough situation, though they shut down the Auburn offense beyond the third inning. B-CU played from behind after the first inning and couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities to overcome the early deficit, falling 9-2 at Plainsman Park.

Auburn scored four runs in each of the first two innings, digging B-CU an early hole for the Wildcats, looking to follow up on a strong late-game offensive outing against Southern on Sunday. The Wildcats put runners on base early in the game, but were unable to convert until the fourth inning.

“Our relief pitching did a good job to stop them,” said Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. “We've got to get better outings from our starting pitcher. Playing catch-up every game takes its toll on you.”

On the mound, B-CU looked for the solution, going to the bullpen until they landed on Joseph Muñoz, coming in to close out the second. Munoz shut down the Tigers' scoring, only allowing one run and collecting 3 strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

“The relief pitching is doing exactly what we want the starting pitcher to do, Melendez said. “Joey was able to do that. After that third inning, we only gave up two hits, against a good-hitting ballclub.”

Shortstop DJ Leonard also went 2-4 on the night.

“Offensively, early in the game we were still trying to make adjustments,” noted Melendez. “I thought the at-bats got better as the game went on. We're making a lot of progress offensively.”

The Wildcats (4-5) return to action with Auburn (6-2) on Wednesday afternoon, with a moved up game time of 4:00 p.m. CST at Plainsman Park.
