MIAMI, Fla. – What started out as a pitchers' duel later shifted the victory to who could make the biggest plays, as a late surge by FIU pushed them past the Wildcats, 7-3, in game one of the two-game trip. In five of the innings, the score remained knotted, but a late shot by FIU in the eighth pushed them over the top.

The pitchers battled it out in the early innings, keeping the score at zero through the third, when B-CU made the first strike. The Wildcats got rolling on offense in the fourth as Peter O'Brien batted in Paul Biocic for the first run. Matt Wright then made the first really big play of the game, with a two-RBI double deep down the right field line to take a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats held in the bottom half, but the Golden Panthers knotted it up again in the bottom of the fifth inning at 3-3 with two big outfield hits and a sacrifice fly.

FIU notched a slight advantage in the seventh on another sac fly, but opened the game up in the eighth with a three-RBI home run to the right field by pinch hitter Garrett Wittels to make the lead 7-3. FIU shut down B-CU in three straight batters in the ninth to send it final.

Matt Wright had the biggest hitting performance for the Wildcats, going 2-3 with two RBI. Peter O'Brien picked up B-CU's other RBI.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats drew well, with a large contingent of south Florida players. More than half of the over five hundred were in to see the Maroon and Gold on the diamond.

Wildcat fans will get another crack at seeing B-CU(15-15) live in Miami, as they wrap up the two-game trip to FIU with another early evening match-up.
