GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Gators of Florida used a pair of home runs and four-run innings to put away the Wildcats in a shutout, Tuesday night at UF's McKethan Stadium. UF got on the board early and grew their lead throughout, holding B-CU to just five hits in the 11-0 loss for the Wildcats.
Florida catcher Mike Zunino opened the scoring for UF with a two-run homer off the left foul pole grate in the first inning. The game remained within reach for the 'Cats, but UF created some separation in the fifth, as Zunino hit another home run to left field, this one for three runs.
The Gators' catcher was responsible for nearly all of the Gators' offense, as he added two more RBI on a single in the eighth to make it 3-4 hitting with seven RBI on the night. Only one other Gator moved past a single hit in the game.
After picking up big innings in the fifth and the eighth, UF went on to top the Wildcats, 11-0.
The B-CU offense never got rolling after collecting solid base hits in the first three innings. The Wildcats finished with five runs for the game.
The Wildcats (29-20, 15-0 MEAC) head back to Daytona Beach with an eye on the big task at hand, completing the MEAC run this weekend with Delaware State (23-21, 11-4 MEAC) coming to town for Senior Day and B-CU's Mother's Day celebration.
“These next three days, we're going to strap down and we're going to work,” Head Coach Melendez said of the preparation for the final MEAC series.
