DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Head Football Coach Brian Jenkins saw “a lot of energy” and a “lot of positives” as he supervised the opening of B-CU's 2012 spring football practice, Monday afternoon at the Wildcats' practice fields, but some familiar faces he and Wildcat fans have grown accustomed to the past four years were nowhere to be seen.
Stalwarts like
Ryan Davis,
Ryan Lewis,
Natiel Curry and
Reggie Sandilands, all prepping for potential professional careers, wrapped up their collegiate playing days with last November's victory over Florida A&M at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Classic. And while graduating seniors are part of the process, Jenkins admitted he missed those guys on the practice field.
“It's hard not to miss them,” Jenkins said. “That type of player, that type of leadership, that type of character is tough to replace. But we have some guys stepping up;
Anthony Woodard is stepping to the plate,
Tevin Toney's doing well, other guys are doing well.”
Monday's practice begins three weeks of sessions leading up to the annual Spring Game, 1:00 p.m. on April 21st, at a location to be determined.
“I saw improvement in a lot of guys and I saw a lot of things we need to get better at, both offensively and defensively,” Jenkins said. “There are technical things we need to fix and I think we will. The thing today is that the kids were going hard and the coaches were coaching hard.”
