NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman football worked further into their second week of fall camp, Friday at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex, continuing on the routine that has made the Wildcats a contender for the past two seasons under Head Coach Brian Jenkins.
Wrapping up a two-a-day set in the late afternoon, the team continues to progress as they work first on themselves before turning their attention to Alabama State, B-CU's Sept. 2 opponent in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
"It was a regular normal day's practice and we worked on the same stuff we normally worked on, playing disciplined and playing sound," Jenkins said. "It was a hard day, but every day is hard for us."
The Wildcats got after it throughout the afternoon, but as the air started to cool with early evening storms on the way, there was some fun thrown into the mix, as B-CU ran up against a formidable opponent in the final minutes of practice.
Beyond the fences of the temporary Wildcat practice facility, several public fields lie adjacent; the home of the New Smyrna Beach Cudas. As the Wildcats worked to implement plays, the PeeWee Cudas team joined the action, serving as defenders in the final handful of plays.
"We let them come in and play some defense, and get a chance to tackle some of our guys (at quarter-speed, of course), to get in that atmosphere," Jenkins said. "To see the little league programs that are always standing outside the fence, it's always good to get those kids involved, and it's also good to remind our guys where they started."
The B-CU coaches helped the kids to line up and tangle with the Wildcats. There's no question that both teams got a great time out of the experience.
"Any time we can get a chance to get involved with young kids or anything to show the community that we appreciate their support, we're for it," Jenkins said. "You never know, a moment like that might spark a kid and have a major effect, and in the future he decides to do something a different way in order to get to a position like that."
The Wildcats continue fall camp with a single practice on Saturday morning.
