PITTSBURGH -
It was
announced this week that Bethune-Cookman football student-athletes Terrance
Hackney and LeBrandon Richardson have been named to the 2012 SBN Sports Black
College All-American (BCAA) Team. The two Wildcats performers are a part of an
11-man team that will be honored at the 39th Annual BCAA Awards Brunch and
during the Black College Hall of Fame Enshrinement taking place February 16 at
the Loews Hotel in Atlanta.
Terrance Hackney, a product of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and
Hargrave Military Academy, transferred into Bethune-Cookman from Ole Miss. The
All-America team recognition is the fourth of its kind on the 2012 campaign for
Hackney, a 6-6, 310-pound offensive lineman who also claimed MEAC Offensive
Lineman of the Year honors following the regular season.
As for LeBrandon Richardson, the
6-2, 255-pound defensive lineman from Miami is making his way onto his second
All-America team after finishing the year sixth on the Wildcats squad for total
tackles, collecting 53 on the campaign - 26 of them via solo performance. The
UCF transfer and Miami Central alum sparked the Wildcats defense with a
team-leading 13 tackles behind the line, including a team-best 8.5 sacks. He
also recovered two fumbles, one going for a score against Tennessee State in a
44-yard return.
The Bethune-Cookman defense ended
the year third in the MEAC for total defense, as well as seventh nationally at
an average of 301.42 yards per game allowed. The Cats allowed just an average
of 134.8 yards per contest on the ground throughout the season, and a pass
efficiency grade of 98.8, pitting them in the top three of the league in both
categories as well. That goes along with having the league's best defense on
third downs, getting off the field 69.5 percent of the time. The takeaways for
the Wildcats allowed them to finish ranked third nationally with a +1.50 margin
against their counterparts.
As a team, the Wildcats won the
2012 MEAC title - the fifth of its kind in school history - after recording an
unblemished record of 8-0 in the league, advancing to the NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs for the second time under head coach Brian Jenkins, recently completing his
third year at the helm in Daytona Beach. Overall, the Cats have won two of the
last three MEAC crowns.
On the year, Hackney helped anchor the Bethune-Cookman offensive
line unit that paved the way for a league-leading 4,665 yards of total offense.
That total includes a league-leading 2,928 yards on the ground. Hackney's
blocking exploits were instrumental in placing Bethune-Cookman atop the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in scoring offense (29.4 points per
game).
The 2012 SBN All-American Team is charged by
eleven players from Winston-Salem State, Tennessee State and Alabama State,
respectively. TSU and WSSU each had four members of their respective squads
selected to the team. Individually, Winston-Salem State quarterback Kameron
Smith is the SBN Sports Doug Williams
Offensive Player of the Year; Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive lineman Brandon
Thurmond is the SBN Sports Mel Blount
Defensive Player of the Year; and Winston-Salem State head coach Connell
Maynor is the SBN Sports Eddie Robinson
Coach of the Year.
The SBN Black College All-American Awards
(BCAA) recognizes and celebrates the academic and athletic achievements of
student athletes who play football at America's Historically Black Colleges and
Universities.
