DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman University football student-athletes Rashard Brown and Nesly Marcellon have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District (District Four) Football Team for 2013-14, announced Thursday afternoon. This is the first CoSIDA All-District Award for both Brown and Marcellon.
The 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Brown, a senior History major from Kissimmee, Fla., holds a 3.86 grade point average. He anchors the Bethune-Cookman offensive line that has helped the Wildcats to a No. 12 national ranking in the latest The Sports Network poll, in addition to an 8-1 overall record (5-0 MEAC). Earlier this week, Brown was recognized as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Lineman of the Week following his performance at North Carolina Central – the first of its kind for him this season. The Wildcats have rolled up an average of 29.6 points per game, 242.2 rushing yards per game, and picking up yards at 396.4 yards per clip average on the campaign.
Marcellon, a senior linebacker from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., currently holds a 3.58 GPA, and is working towards a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. On the year, Marcellon is tied for seventh on the Wildcats defense with 23 total tackles (10 solo / 13 assisted). He has seen action in nine games, including six starts. His 6.5 tackles for loss is second on the team, as well as his three sacks are tied for second. He has accumulated two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
Brown and Marcellon are each expected to graduate in the spring.
