DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 15 UCF used a big eight-run fourth inning to break open a tight game Wednesday night, keeping themselves unbeaten on the campaign on the strength of an 18-8 decision over Bethune-Cookman at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Bethune-Cookman (0-9) scored three runs in the home-half of the second, taking a 3-1 advantage.
Nathan Bond walked and Zach Olszewski singled through the right side, setting up Austin Garcia's sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position right off the bat. Left fielder Rakeem Quinn singled to plate Bond, followed by Jameel Edney's RBI single to right that crossed Olszewski. The final run was brought across on the strength of Jake Welch's RBI single to left, bringing in Quinn.
The three-run second was enough for UCF (8-0) to pull starting pitcher Ryan Meyer who was masterful against the Wildcats just a week ago in Orlando, Florida.
B-CU starting pitcher Tyler Norris was in control through the first three innings, only to fall into trouble during the fourth. For the third time in as many games, a team was able to bat around on the Wildcats, as B-CU fourth-year head coach Jason Beverlin went to the bullpen twice in the fourth inning.
It was an inning in which the Knights scored eight runs and touched up B-CU pitcher Norris and reliever Donte Lindsay, before Juan Pizzaro closed out the frame.
For the Wildcats, the fourth inning for the visitors was the second time in three games a team scored eight runs on them in that particular frame.
Over the course of the final six innings, UCF would score 17 of its 18 runs, as the Knights pounded out 19 hits on the evening.
The Maroon and Gold got its offense rolling late, scoring three runs in the ninth.
Shortstop Jordan Robinson tallied his sole RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing leadoff man Jake Welch to score from third. Just prior to the Robinson at-bat, UCF reliever Joe Marotta spotted the Wildcats a run via a pair of wild pitches, which eventually allowed Edney to score. The final run was secured by Brandon Wilkes as he used a third wild pitch of the frame from Marotta to rush in from third base.
Bethune-Cookman secured eight runs on nine hits in the game.
The Cats were led at the dish by Rakeem Quinn's 2-for-4 effort, as he scored twice and posted a RBI. Additionally, Edney added two RBI.
In all, three UCF Knights pounded out three hits, led by Matt Diorio with a 3-for-4 showing, adding two RBI and scoring three times.
The win went to UCF's Eric Hepple, earning his first win of the year, with four innings worked out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out a pair. Norris collected the loss, tossing three innings and giving up four runs on four hits and walking three with three strikeouts. The B-CU bullpen was tagged for 14 runs on 15 hits and amassed eight strikeouts in six innings combined.
The Wildcats will look to earn their first win of the game Saturday, Feb 25, when they open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Florida A&M at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Saturday's game is scheduled for a doubleheader with the first game going nine innings, and the second scheduled for seven. First pitch of game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
