DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After holding court with representatives from the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Kansas Chiefs following the conclusion of Bethune-Cookman's Pro DayTuesday morning,
Tavarus Dantzler and a Green Bay Packers scout sat on a Municipal Stadium sideline bench for a conversation that looked more like an after-Sunday dinner porch exchange rather than a discussion of future professional football opportunities.
Meanwhile,
Jhomo Gordon obliged some scouts and ran a few extra routes.
LeBranden Richardson and
Ralph Williams chatted with NFL emissaries also, and
Erik Williams, the son of an NFL All Pro defensive end, wasn't relying on his father's connections to keep the dream of playing on Sundays alive.
Thing about Pro Day is that it's when the dream starts the grotesque morph into business, and, like any other business, sometimes it isn't what you know or whatever time you ran the 40, but who you know and who saw you on any given day.
So as we wait for those UNOFFICIAL results like all the other Kiper-ish kooks for the 16 Bethune-Cookman participants and accepting the fact it would probably be easier to obtain Hillary's deleted e-mails, suffice to say that the 12 scouts in attendance got what they wanted/needed, and several Wildcats are either now on the radar or have a brighter blip.
“A lot of people with their own two eyes saw what I'm about,” said Dantzler, one of B-CU's defensive stalwarts during the 2014 campaign. “It's just a blessing to showcase your abilities.”
Dantzler was the Wildcats' second leading tackler in 2014 with 80 in addition to a sack and three fumble recoveries. So the scouts knew about his physicality, intensity, yada yada yada. When Danztler caught a ball during one drill, the notion of turning a linebacker into a tight end came into play.
“They didn't know I had finesse,” Dantzler said.
Afterwards, Dantzler appreciated the extended visit with the guy from Green Bay. Here's where the connections come in: Dantzler's agents also represent Jean Fanor, who usurped the Ryan Davis coronation that was the 2011 B-CU Pro Day with a workout so impressive that Fanor was signed by the Chiefs on Draft Day right after Davis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After two seasons with the Arena Football League's Tampa Bay Storm, Fanor is now on the practice squad…of the Packers.
“I had a lot of positive feedback,” Dantzler said. “He told me to stay humble, keep everything clean and that this was my time.”
Dantzler has a workout with the Miami Dolphins upcoming. The Pittsburgh Steelers are also in the mix.
On the offensive side, Ghordon's season included a team-high 36 receptions and a touchdown on national television. But if the scout from Tampa Bay or Atlanta wants to see you run a curl route, you run a curl route.
“Maybe they were interested, but they [scouts] ask me to run a few routes and I did what they asked me to do,” said Gordon. “Hopefully, they are interested.”
Gordon took a low-key approach to the proceedings.
“My method was to be relaxed as possible,” Gordon said. “I just took it as another day doing some drills.”
While pursuing football, Gordon's also enjoying a return to track and field for the first time since high school. He won the long jump in his first meet three weeks ago when the B-CU team competed at the Tiger Orange and Blue Classic at Savannah State.
“I want to make some noise in track,” Gordon said. “I'm doing fairly well, and it's getting to be a bright future in the next few weeks.”
