DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – During a game that was the Wildcats following the opening tip, Bethune-Cookman women's basketball sophomore
Chasimmie Brown finished with her first double-double during a 54-45 season opening victory of Edward Waters College, Friday, Nov. 11 at the ICI Center.
Brown's 13 points, 10 rebounds and one block headed the Wildcats, as BCU led the entire game after scoring first at the 8:48 mark.
Despite back-to-back three's from the Tigers before the end of the first quarter, BCU held onto a 13-10 lead early, while ten of the Wildcat's 13 points were shared between
Kendra Cooper and
Lyndsey Edwards.
Before heading into the break, BCU added 14 more to their lead, making it 27-20 after the first twenty minutes of play.
At the half, Brown led all scorers with nine points and six boards, trailed by Cooper's eight.
The Wildcat's rebound total doubled the Tigers at the break with 30 as a team, while EWC outshot BCU 28.0% to 26.5% from the field.
It was 40-31 after the third, before BCU saw its largest lead of the game at the 7:59 mark in the fourth following a three ball from
Emily Williams making it 47-33.
The Wildcats were able to hold onto the 54-44 victory, opening the 2016-17 season 1-0.
BCU outrebounded the Tigers and impressive 53-to-33 during the win, with 21 offensive boards compared to EWC's seven.
Trailing Brown, Cooper and
Ashanti Hunt each finished with 10 points and four steals, adding seven and nine rebounds respectively.
Edwards added five points, five boards and three blocks for the Wildcats, while rookie
Armani Walker finished with six points and three boards during the BCU debut.
The Wildcat's return to action on Sunday, Nov. 13 as Bethune-Cookman travels to Jacksonville, Florida for a 2 p.m., match-up against JU.
