DeLAND, Fla. – After leading by as many as 14, a fourth quarter offensive collapse from Bethune-Cookman women's basketball allowed Stetson to come from behind and pull off a 63-60 victory on their home court, Wednesday, Nov. 16 in DeLand, Florida.
The Hatters got a quick bucket to open the contest before BCU used four-straight three balls from
Emily Williams (x2),
Taylor Houston and
Angel Golden to gain the ten-point, 16-6 advantage.
The Wildcat's shot an impressive 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, holding Stetson to only 28.6% and forcing eight Hatters turnovers, with the 18-8 lead.
A rocky second allowed Stetson close in on the BCU lead as the Hatters outscored the Wildcats 15-to-10 and forced eight BCU turnovers before heading into the break.
Despite the momentum shift out of the locker room, the Wildcats were able to edge SU in the third, holding onto a 49-42 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
The Wildcats lone field goal in the final stanza game at the 5:19 mark when
Emily Williams knocked down her third three ball of the night, giving BCU the 52-48 advantage.
A Stetson trey from Brittney Chambers at the 4:01 mark in the fourth gave the Hatters their first lead since the opening bucket (53-52).
Houston nailed two foul shots at the 3:33 to put the Wildcats back on top before Chambers put the Hatters back on top.
Trailing four with 13 seconds left in the game,
Kendra Cooper was fouled behind the arch, knocking down all three to bring the game back within one.
The Wildcats were unable to knock down any last chance efforts, finishing the fourth quarter shooting 7.1% from the field (1-for-14), falling 63-60.
Houston led all scorers during the BCU setback with 17 points with a team-best eight rebounds.
Trailing Houston, Cooper finished with 14 points and four assists while
Emily Williams had 11 points before fouling out.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19 as Bethune-Cookman travels to Prairie View, Texas to face Prairie View at 3 p.m.
