DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – That block by
Kailyn Williams was just as much an exorcism as it was a game-winning defensive play.
After a clutch
Kendra Cooper go-ahead jumper with six seconds left, Williams emphatically rejected Simone Brown's lay-up as Bethune-Cookman downed North Florida 52-50 Thursday afternoon.
Angel Golden's career-high 19 points carried the Lady Wildcats for 36 minutes, then it came down to Cooper doing what a senior guard's supposed to do in the clutch and Williams doing what the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player Of The Year is supposed to do with the game on the line.
And when Williams denied Brown, the Wildcat bench celebrated loudly. Four times this year Bethune-Cookman (3-6) has seen its lead disappear in the fourth quarter.
"That block released a lot of frustration," said B-CU Head Coach Vanessa Blair Lewis. "They did not want to lose another game in the fourth. Kailyn and Kendra came to play when the game was on the line."
North Florida (6-6) made its run from a 10-point deficit, taking a 48-47 lead with 3:12 remaining on a Norris three-pointer, but Bethune-Cookman regained the lead when Williams finished a three-point play with 1:37 left.
Bethune-Cookman had a couple of chances to seal it, but came up empty and Brown scored off a Wildcat turnover to tie it with 26 seconds left.
Golden had hit five three-pointers, but was being marked by North Florida and wasn't open. Cooper, just 3-10 before that, had the look.
"When it came down, I had to take the shot," Cooper said. "The play had both Angel and me as options. It's good to see other people like Angel step up. "
Golden (6-12) and
Chasimmie Brown (2-2) were the only B-CU players shooting above 50 percent from the field. The Wildcats connected on 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, and North Florida was 19-56 (33.7) in the lowest offensive output against the Wildcats since Edward Waters' 45 in the season opener.
"The young kids tonight stepped up and were our offense," Blair Lewis said ""Angel was able to really connect against the zone."
Brown led the Ospreys with 22.
