Cats Drop Series to Eagles with 8-1 Loss

BCU gets solid pitching from Branden Frank in defeat

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast got a strong start from pitcher Evan Lumbert as he helped hold off Bethune-Cookman, 8-1 and allow the visiting Eagles to take the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
 
For the 11th time in the first 13 games of the 2018 campaign, Bethune-Cookman (4-9) allowed a run in the first inning of the game to fall behind, 1-0.
 
Kohl Gilmore's RBI ground out to first allowed leadoff hitter Marc Coffers to score after he was hit by a Jeremy Adams pitch to begin the game.
 
Florida Gulf Coast (8-2) increased the lead by two in the top-half of the third inning as Richie Garcia's run-scoring single shot back up the middle plated Gage Morey. That was followed by Eli Lovell's RBI double down the line in left to bring around Garcia for the 3-0 Eagles lead.
 
In the top of the fourth the day would come to a close for BCU freshman pitcher Jeremy Adams after the Eagles added four runs on the board to advance the lead at 7-0.
 
Bethune-Cookman finally broke through on FGCU starter Evan Lumbert in the bottom of the sixth inning when right fielder Kyle Corbin tripled to lead off the at-bat for the Wildcats. He was driven in a play later on senior third baseman Jameel Edney's RBI ground out to shortstop.
 
BCU trailed 7-1 after six complete innings.
 
FGCU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the final 8-1 decision.
 
Garcia would score on a Lovell single up the middle, after Garcia reached safely being hit by a pitch from reliever Joseph Calamita.
 
Lumbert (2-0) collected the win for the Eagles in six innings of work, allowing just one run in scattering three hits and striking out 10 batters against a single walk. The loss was accepted by Adams who fell to 1-2 on the campaign, as the rookie was tagged for seven runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings on the hill.
 
BCU got hits from four different players in the game with Corbin, Giovany Lorenzo, Ian Claudio and Adonis Lao.
 
Bethune-Cookman looks to turn things around Wednesday, March 7 when the Wildcats host North Florida to Jackie Robinson Ballpark for a midweek affair beginning at 6 p.m.
