Homecoming always brings back memories. When your team wins the game, it's that much more memorable.
There have been plenty of memorable games played on Bethune-Cookman's homecoming weekend, but we're going to keep it to seven for two reasons: We're going to let you have some input on our social media platforms and … keepin' it real, we want to check out some of those food vendors on campus. Hey, it's only once a year. Â
Â
1952: Bethune-Cookman 8, Florida A&M 7
This should be required reading on this campus. In attendance was Branch Rickey – the guy Harrison Ford played in "42" who played a key role in Jackie Robinson integrating baseball. Rickey saw the living legend "Cy" McClairen catch a 38-yard touchdown from Mike Ardis in the third quarter to give the Wildcats the lead. The Wildcats would hold on to defeat the Rattlers 8-7 for their first win in the series since 1926 and last until 1973.
1961: Bethune-Cookman 61, Lane 6 and 1962: Bethune-Cookman 74, Claflin 0
In 1960, Florida A&M embarrassed the Wildcats, 97-0, on homecoming. One year later, McClairen, now in his first season as head coach, proved things would be different as his 'Cats put up 61 points. What did he do for an encore the next year? Rack up 74 points and 690 yards against Claflin. Homecoming was fun again.
1984: Bethune-Cookman 42, Morris Brown 28
Homecoming was also the season finale because of a contract dispute. Bernard Hawk's five touchdown passes wrapped up a season that saw Head Coach Larry Little lead the Wildcats to their first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.
1991: Bethune-Cookman 20, Howard 14, 2OT
The only overtime game in homecoming history. Willie Ceasar's 2-yard score kept conference championship hopes alive.Â
2015: Bethune-Cookman 59, Norfolk State 49
A combined 108 points and 1,080 made for an entertaining afternoon.
Quentin Williams threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns.
2017: Bethune-Cookman 24, Hampton 21
The homecoming game with the best finish of the 21st century.
Akevious Williams connected with
Jawill Davis on a 7-yard with 3:10 for the go-ahead score, then a
Sam Marc interception and a missed Hampton field goal on the final play preserved the victory.
