Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – An early 3-0 lead wasn't enough as Bethune-Cookman dropped a 7-4 score to Florida International University Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Nate Sterijevski's RBI single and
Brandon Wilkes' sacrifice fly helped BCU (14-25) to a two-run first, and
Zach Spivey led off the second with a single and scored on a
Brady Van Hook fielder's choice.
FIU (16-20) took the lead for good with a four-run third. With two outs, Adan Fernandez sent a seeing-eye single through the left side to score a pair, and Jose Garcia lifted a two-run homer to left for the Panther lead.
Alec Mendez (0-3) took the loss after throwing six innings and allowing seven hits, five runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Bryan Melendez and
Brandon Wilkes pitched in relief.
Panther reliever Christian Dearman (1-1) pitched 3.2 innings with one run to garner the win.
Each team registered 10 hits, but BCU stranded 12 runners, including eight in scoring position.
Over Torres paced the charge with a 3-4 night and a double.
BCU is on the road to take on North Carolina Central in a conference series. The three-game set begins Thursday in Durham, N.C.
