DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ryan Ayrey drove in four runs and three newcomers combined on a three-hit shutout as Bethune-Cookman opened its 2020 season with an 8-0 victory over Alabama A&M Friday at a wind-swept Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Nick Rogers,
Knickolas Billings and
Matthew Henson teamed up to strike out 12 batters for the Wildcats.
Rogers shook off throwing balls on his first five pitches to post three no-hit innings.
Billings picked up the win after registering five strikeouts against the six batters he faced.
Henson worked out of a bases-loaded seventh for the long relief save.
BCU broke the game open with five unearned runs in the fifth.
Matthew Garcia, who registered four assists and a putout defensively, registered the first run on a wild pitch.
Veteran
Chase DeBonis and Ayrey, a junior college transfer, followed with consecutive two-run singles.
Ayrey doubled home two more in the fifth, while DeBonis scored on a
Shamir Morales grounder to complete the scoring.
The series resumes Saturday at 6 p.m.
