Last Time Out

After dropping their first opening night contest in five years, the Wildcats rebounded with back-to-back walk-off wins against the reigning Patriot League regular season champion Lehigh Mountain Hawks.

It took extra innings Saturday night, as a dropped ball by the catcher on a tag attempt gave B-CU the 7-6 win when Jorge Braceras crossed the plate.

Senior second baseman Colton Olasin played hero Sunday with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Olasin led the Wildcats offensively all weekend. At the dish, he finished 4-10 and drove in a team-high four runs with a stolen base.

Scouting the Panthers

The Panthers are 1-2 after the first weekend of play, dropping two of three to George Mason at home. The Panthers scored seven total runs over three games.

The Panthers enter the 2023 season under first-year head coach Rich Witten. Witten, a former assistant at Virginia, takes over the program from former Wildcat star Mervyl Melendez.

Outfielder Alec Sanchez hit .417 last weekend in three games, recording five hits, a double, a homer, and an RBI.

Notes

  • Despite three excellent starts from the B-CU rotation, no Wildcat starter recorded a decision last weekend. In 17.1 innings, Louis Lipthratt, Nolan Santos, and Daniel Gaviria combined to allow six runs, 22 strikeouts, and only four walks.
  • Santos recorded 11 strikeouts, one shy of his career-best of 12 as a Wildcat. He recorded double-digit strikeouts six times last season
  • Luis Tuero recorded a team-high five hits last weekend, along with a double and two RBI.

All-Time Series

This will mark the 69th time that FIU and B-CU will meet. The Panthers lead the Wildcats 53-15 all-time, and the Panthers have won the last eight meetings.
