The Wildcats stole a season-high 14 bases, but it was not enough as the Cats dropped the series finale with AAMU, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
Bethune-Cookman opened the scoring in the top of the first as
Daniel Figueroa was hit by a pitch, advanced on a
Garrett Chun single, and came into score on a passed ball. One batter later, Chun crossed the plate on a
Sergio Rivera RBI groundout that made it 2-0
B-CU stranded three runners between the second and third innings before Alabama A&M tied the contest at 2-2 with a pair of two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the third.
After two more stranded baserunners for B-CU in the fourth, the Bulldogs doubled their run total after a B-CU throwing error and RBI groundout to make it 4-0.
The Wildcats retook the lead in the fifth as
Ramses Cordova cleared the bases with a single down the right field line that scored
Irvin Escobar,
Colton Olasin, and
Manny Souffrain and put the Cats in front, 5-4.
An inning later, Alabama A&M answered, scoring two runs on an RBI triple and a third with an RBI double to left center that made it 7-5.
Three hits in the eighth pulled the Cats to within 7-6 after
Jose Gonzalez singled to third, but a popup left runners on second and third.
B-CU threatened again in the ninth, putting a runner on third with two outs, but a foulout ended the night with the Bulldogs in front, 7-6.
Daniel Gaviria made the start, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Dylan Vega,
Patrick Groark, and
Pablo Torres each appeared out of the pen for B-CU.
Jacksonville is 21-20 on the year and 15-6 in ASUN conference play. The Dolphins enter play Tuesday on a four-game winning streak after a sweep of conference foe Queens last weekend.
Back on March 12, the Wildcats walked-off the Dolphins as
Jose Gonzalez sent a ball into left center off JU closer Isaac Williams to score
Jayme Villafane and send B-CU home with the 4-3 win.
The Dolphins are hitting .284 as a team with 28 homers. Junior first baseman Josh Steidl leads Jacksonville with a .321 average, eight homers, and 43 RBI.
On the mound the Dolphins have pitched to a 6.40 team ERA with 338 strikeouts to only 179 walks.
Tuesday marks the 66th meeting in the all-time series between B-CU and JU. Bethune-Cookman is 16-49 in those games, including a 6-29 mark on the road.
