BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior starting pitcher Edwin Sanchez has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. It is the first weekly honor of his career

B-CU's Sunday starter turned in his best outing of the young season Sunday to help lift the Wildcats to their first series win of the season over Atlantic 10 opponent UMass. The El Paso Community College transfer tossed six innings of scoreless ball allowing only five hits with a season-high nine strikeouts - the most by a Wildcat not named Joel Core. His efforts aided the Wildcats to a 10-3 win to clinch the weekend series. 

The honor marks the first weekly award of the season for Bethune-Cookman baseball, and the first in the career of Sanchez. 

The Wildcats return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 28 as they host former MEAC foe Maryland Eastern Shore for a four-game set. First pitch of the weekend series is set for 7 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
