DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - B-CU backstop
Maikol Lucena was chosen among 50 players for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award Midseason Watchlist, the Wichita Sports Commission announced Wednesday morning.
In his junior season, Lucena has been one of the Wildcats' top hitters, leading the team in batting average (.375) and ranking second in RBI (24). He has hit four doubles this season and recorded more walks than strikeouts.
Behind the dish, Lucena has been elite defensively. He has just one error this season, good for a .995 fielding percentage has thrown out 13 of 15 potential base stealers.
His team will be back in action this weekend for a key SWAC series against the Southern Jaguars. First pitch is set for Friday at 7 p.m. EST.
