LORMAN, Miss. — it was all Bethune-Cookman Friday night as the wildcats opened their series with Alcorn state with an 11 1 run rule-win, Friday night at McGowan Stadium.
Bethune-Cookman (15-7, 4-0 SWAC) took advantage of miscues to score in each of the first three innings. The Wildcats pushed across an unearned run in the first, added another in the second on a sacrifice fly by Sergio Rivera, and made it 3-0 in the third following a defensive error that allowed a run to score.
Alcorn State (5-17, 1-3 SWAC) threatened in the third and broke through in the fifth. After a pair of baserunners moved into scoring position, an RBI single by Julian Jarrett brought home a run to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The game turned decisively in the sixth inning, when B-CU capitalized on control issues and defensive lapses. A leadoff walk and a failed pickoff attempt set the tone before a balk and a passed ball brought in two runs. Later in the inning, Jeter Polledo laced a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-1.
Bethune-Cookman added insurance in the seventh without recording a hit. The Wildcats drew multiple walks and took advantage of another error and a wild pitch to plate three more runs and stretch the margin to 11-1.
Alcorn State was unable to mount a response over the final two innings, as the Wildcats' pitching held the Braves hitless down the stretch to secure the series-opening victory.
- Harbertsing Abreu allowed one earned run in five innings with five strikeouts. He picked up his second win of the season.
- Justin Morales pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
- Andrey Martinez and Chris Watson each recorded two-hit nights, with Martinez hitting two doubles.
- Maikol Lucena finished with two walks and two RBI.
- The Wildcats finished with six stolen bases.
The Wildcats and Braves close out the series with a double-header tomorrow starting a 2 p.m. EST.
