The Wildcats (22-10, 10-2) set the tone early in game two against Southern, scoring six runs in the first three innings. Erick Almonte got it started with a sacrifice fly in the first.
In the second, Sergio Rivera stole third and scored on an error by the catcher to grab the team's second run.
B-CU really broke the game open in the third. Jeter Polledo and Chrisopher Watson recorded RBI doubles while Erick Almonte picked up a sac fly to push the lead to 6-0.
Southern managed its first run in the fourth. Brant Stewart hit an RBI single to cut it to 6-1.
But the Wildcats scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Jaguars scored some runs late to make the score more respectable, but the offensive explosion was too much for Southern to overcome.
The LSU Tigers are 22-11 on the year, recently returning to DIBaseball.com's top 25 following a stretch of six wins in their last eight games. The Tigers are 16-7 at home this season, including a run-rule victory over the Southern Jaguars last Tuesday.
The Tigers are a formidable offensive team, ranking 16h in the country in runs, 29th in home runs, and 44th in slugging percentage.
Jake Brown leads the team with 12 home runs and 41 RBI. He also leads LSU with a.659 slugging percentage and 38 runs scored. All of the Tigers' regular starters have at least two home runs.
On the pitching side, LSU has accumulated a 4.51 team ERA with 397 strikeouts to 155 walks. They are allowing a .212 batting average and have given up 24 home runs.
The Wildcats are likely to face a number of different pitcher as the Tigers typically opt for a bullpen game during midweek games.
- Justin Morales will draw the start for B-CU on the mound. He is 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA this season and has not allowed an earned run in five straight outings.
- The Wildcats are 3-4 in midweek games.
- Christopher Watson hit a double, two home runs, and drove in four runs in the Wildcats' series win over Southern.
- Michael Rodriguez is on a four-game hitting streak. He has recorded two hits in each of those games including three doubles.
- Andrey Martinez is on a five-game hitting streak. He has gone 8-for-17 with two homers and five RBI during that span.
- Bethune-Cookman currently ranks 46th in the country in team ERA (4.44).
Tuesday's game will be the fourth all-time matchup between B-CU and LSU. The Wildcats are still searching for their first-ever win against the Tigers.
