DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. -- "Bend but not break," was the approach of the Bethune-Cookman's defense in Saturday's 35-20 victory over Howard University.
The 1-9 Bison came into the game with two former B-CU assistants - Brad Bernard and Raymond Gross - who have implement a version of the triple option B-CU ran for 13 seasons under former Head Coach Alvin Wyatt. The tweaks, especially in the downfield passing game, helped Howard rack up 389 total yards.
"I hate to say it but this game we played to our opponents' level," said linebacker Reggie Sandilands. "When we do that things seem to crack and we cannot have that on our defense."
Although Howard had success moving the ball, five turnovers forced by the Wildcats curtailed any upset hopes
Sandilands and Ryan Lewis both had great performances.
Lewis finished the game with eight tackles, a sack, and an interception he returned for 69 yards to set up an Eddie Poole touchdown. "I'm blessed for the defensive lineman we have, our safeties, and our coaches," said Lewis. "Ah, man, you said 69 yards, I should have gotten in the end zone."
Sandilands registered seven tackles, a sack, and a interception that he returned for a touchdown.
