Alyse Guzman Named as MEAC Volleyball Rookie of the Week

Oct. 29, 2007

Virginia Beach, Va. - With an outstanding performance against Winston-Salem State this past Friday night, Bethune-Cookman University freshman setter Alyse Guzman has been named as this week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week in volleyball.

Guzman, an agile 5-foot-10 student-athlete hailing from Vacaville, Calif., saw action in both matches last week for the Wildcats as they went 1-1 on the campaign against Florida A&M (loss) and Winston-Salem State (win). This was her first "true" playing time of the campaign in straight games for the `Cats.

The freshman setter played mainly at a defensive specialist role as she registered a season-high 16 digs against Florida A&M. Guzman also recorded one kill on two attacks from the back row with one service ace.

Guzman currently leads the squad in service aces on the year.

Against Winston-Salem State, Guzman hit .333 in the match with six kills and two digs as an attacker for the Wildcats. On the week, she hit a blistering .357 with seven kills on 14 total attacks.

This is the first MEAC Rookie of the Week award for Alyse Guzman for the 2007 season. In fact, this is the first MEAC award for any Wildcat volleyball player this year as well.

MEAC Player of the Week honors went to Jeniqua Moran of Morgan State. The senior outside hitter pitched in an average of 19 kills and 10.5 digs on the week. She recorded a double-double of 19 kills and 14 digs in a win over conference foe Delaware State.

B-CU will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 30 when they travel down the road to east Volusia County for a date with Stetson University. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
