Daytona Beach, Fla. -
It was officially announced on Monday morning that Stacy Beckton has been added as a fulltime assistant coach for the Bethune-Cookman University men's basketball program. Beckton joins the staff fulltime after serving a previous stint as a volunteer assistant coach.
Beckton comes to B-CU after serving the past season as the head boys' varsity coach at nearby Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Fla. He spent the last season in that capacity while being a longtime advisor at Mainland High School.
He does not come to B-CU without having common ties, however. Beckton served under B-CU head coach Clifford Reed, Jr. as a volunteer assistant from 2002-2006. So, Beckton has knowledge of both the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Bethune-Cookman University.
"Stacy's multiple years of experience at both the high school and collegiate level, and working for myself a number of those years, makes him a great choice for this staff," stated B-CU head coach Clifford Reed, Jr.
While at B-CU, Beckton's duties will be to assist with recruiting, individual instruction with student-athletes, acedmic support and scouting of opponents. He will also help to serve with the normal day-to-day operations of the men's basketball program. He has more than 10 years of experience working as a camp commissioner with the Summer-Orlando Magic Basketball Camp beginning in 1982.
Beckton is a graduate of Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Florida. After graduation, he continued his education while playing for two years at St. John's Community College during the 1990-92 playing seasons. He began his coaching career at the start of the 1993-94 campaign, serving as an assistant varsity coach and the head freshman coach at his alma mater (Seabreeze High School).
"Stacy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this program," continued Reed. "He also has two important factors that I always look for in any individual--loyalty and competence. He brings both of those qualities to the table, and that's important to me and this program, as a whole."
From 1995-98, Beckton served as an assistant coach under Clifford Reed, Jr. at Atlantic High School, and also served as the head Junior Varsity Boys' coach. After that, he went on to serve a stint with Mainland High School as the Boys' Junior Varsity head coach ... as well as the assistant coach for the Varsity Boys' team.
Beckton and his wife, Carolyn, have two beautiful children, Stacha (15) and Stacy, Jr. (9). The Becktons currently reside in Daytona Beach.
The appointment of Beckton now moves current assistant coach Howard White, Jr. who departed the program at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season.
