DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman University has announced the Homewood Suites Student-Athletes of the Week for the period of October 13-19, 2014. Ricy Brown (@CookmanTrack) and Alejandra Vidal (@CatsTennis) each collect the weekly award, and is the first of its kind for either student-athlete this year. As for Brown, this is his third student-athlete of the week award in his career, while the women's tennis team puts a representative on the Home Suites Student-Athlete of the Week list for a school-leading fourth time during the 2014 fall calendar.
Ricy Brown, helped the Wildcats men's cross country team over the weekend at the Disney Cross Country Classic in Kissimmee, Florida. The 5-6, senior from Clearwater, Florida, cut close to a personal best performance, turning in the second-best time in the 8k this season, finishing 15th in the “Scar” 8k race with a time of 25:53.62. The men's team finished 11th in the team standings with a combined time of 2:25:23.40.
Alejandra Vidal had a strong weekend for the Wildcats women's tennis team at the Bedford Cup, hosted by the University of North Florida. The 5-foot-6 freshman from Maracaibo, Zulia advanced to the Singles 4 flight championship, but fell in straight-set fashion 6-1, 6-1 to UCF's Monica Matias on Sunday. During Saturday's play, she and fellow freshman Maria Garoz-Moreno won the Doubles 3 flight title together. Vidal is 9-1 in singles play in the fall after three tournaments.
