DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A pair of freshmen earned the final Homewood Suites Student-Athlete of the Week awards for the 2015-16 athletic year, announced Monday, May 16, by the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics at Bethune-Cookman University. Annie Bakenhus (softball) and Danny Rodriguez (baseball) took home the weekly awards for their respective sports.
Annie Bakenhus, a 5-foot-9 freshman left fielder for the Wildcats, played and started in all six games on the week, helping Bethune-Cookman at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. The Yucaipa, California native, and alum of Yucaipa High, helped spark the Cats to a 4-2 record and a spot in the MEAC title game for the third consecutive year. Defensively, she delivered nine putouts in nine attempts for a perfect fielding percentage.
Danny Rodriguez, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound first baseman for the Wildcats baseball team, helped B-CU to a 2-2 record on the week. The native of Pembroke Pines, Florida led the Wildcats at the dish with a .444 average. He finished with eight hits, two doubles and a home run, leading to a team-high .722 slugging percentage. He would drive in a team-high matching five runs, while scoring four times himself. In the field, Rodriguez produced 33 putouts and three assists in 36 total attempts at first base, adding to a perfect fielding percentage.
