DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Under the direction of Head Coach Terry Sims, Bethune-Cookman Football completed the first spring practice of the 2018 calendar year on Thursday, March 29, at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Due to renovations at the Wildcats Practice Fields on ther BCU campus, all spring practices for the Wildcats will take place at Municipal Stadium.
"It feels great to be back out here," said Head Coach Terry Sims, recently completing his third season at the helm of the Maroon and Gold program. "To be able to coach these young men and a chance to get better every time we step onto the field. That's what it's all about."
The Wildcats went through early training with the strength staff, under the direction of Corliss Fingers, BCU Director of Strength and Conditioning. That was followed by 21 periods on the opening day.
The quarterbacks, consisting of redshirt sophomore Akevious Williams and redshirt junior Jabari Dunham, worked with a rather new receiving core. Gone are seniors Frank Brown and Jawill Davis, each having worked out last week on the annual BCU Pro Day. The receivers were led by Keavon Mitchell who spoke to the News-Journal to begin the day.
Bethune-Cookman's defensive unit, led by redshirt junior linebacker Trenton Bridges, worked with Charles "Yogi" Jones, along with a direct eye from Sims.
"We lost a lot in the defensive backfield, no doubt about it" admits Sims. "I think this is where our recruiting and how we coach the kids up comes into play. You're always going to lose good players – year in and year out. That's why you recruit to fill those gaps the seniors leave behind."
The offensive went through quick drills under Offensive Coordinator Allen Suber, while the receivers were together with Suber and assistant coach Will Glover.
The Cats are back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. for the second practice of the spring campaign.
Bethune-Cookman's spring game is set for Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m. The game will take place at Municipal Stadium.
