Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – A strong start by
Isaak Gutierrez went for naught as Bethune-Cookman fell 3-2 to North Carolina Central Thursday at the Durham Athletic Park.
The junior hurler pitched six innings with two earned runs. He allowed eight hits, no walks, and had two strikeouts in a no-decision.
BCU (14-26, 7-9) had just four hits, three off NCCU starter Chris Kernan, who allowed two runs, one earned, in 5.2 frames.
BCU scored first with a Joe Fernando solo shot to left in the second.
After the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the inning, the Wildcats regained the lead in the sixth when
Chase DeBonis reached on an RBI fielder's choice to bring home
Brandon Wilkes.
But once again, NCCU answered. Myles Costen's RBI single up the middle knotted the contest at two.
The 'Cats loaded the bags in the eighth with one out, but DeBonis lined into a double play. Meanwhile, reliever
Jordan Pinto was effective until a tough ninth. Trey Maslin's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth brought home the winning run.
Pinto (4-2) pitched 2.1 innings with three hits, one run, a walk, and four strikeouts.
BCU continues the series tomorrow in Durham at 3 p.m.
