DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Mina Matsuba delivered the deciding point in Bethune-Cookman's 5-4 victory over crosstown rival Embry-Riddle Tuesday.
The senior rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Maud Mrad 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to give herself and the Lady Wildcats (2-5) their first win since the season opener against Wofford on Jan. 26.
"I saw some fire in Mina I've haven't seen in a while," said B-CU coach
Val Villucci. "That's the best I've seen her play. She fought hard and kept going after her shots. "
Bethune-Cookman was shorthanded again, competing with five players and basically conceding two points. Matsuba, freshman
Debora Echeverria and
Matea Roki each took their singles and doubles matches to help the Lady Wildcats defeat the Eagles (1-4) for the second straight year.
"This was a substantial win," Villucci said. "We need to start building some confidence. We've been taking a lot of losses and we needed get back on track and getting the feeling of how it is win to win. You get a taste of that and you get hungrier."
Bethune-Cookman took both of the contested doubles points and Roki's win at No. 3 for leads of 2-1 and 3-2. The Eagles took a 4-3 lead before Echeverria rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the second set for her No. 2 singles victory to set the stage for Matsuba.
Echeverria has now won two straight single matches, while Matsuba drew closer to the all-time victories records. Matsuba now needs four singles, four doubles and nine combined wins to setting the marls.
Bethune-Cookman hosts Volusia county rival Stetson Sunday.
