DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Friday's first day of Fall Tennis saw a freshman file a fantastic first impression.
Michelle Ncube won both her singles matches and combined with senior
Karen Romero for a doubles win, while Juan Navarro paced the men with two singles and a doubles victory at the Embry-Riddle Open.
Ncube, a freshman from Zimbabwe, defeated Flagler's Lixin Wang 6-2 6-0 and Flagler's Alessandra Traub 7-5 6-3. Later in the day, she and Romero posted an 8-5 decision over Embry-Riddle's Kravajica/Wood 8-5. A promising start, considering that the Lady Wildcats are looking to replace the graduated legend
Alejandra Vidal and No. 1 player Michelle Roki.
Navarro, who led the men's team in singles victory last year, downed Embry-Riddle's Blake Rohwder 6-3 6-4 and Flagler's Konstantin Dustman 6-3 6-3 in singles then teamed with Phillip Lynch for an 8-6 triumph in doubles.
The newcomer on the men's side – Victor Castro – split his singles matches and won doubles.
Romero split her singles matches, while
Phatsimo Ruele won a singles match and a doubles before retiring in her second singles appearance.Lynch also split his singles matches.
