GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A pair of Wildcats wrapped up their first event of the fall as Janet Imbo-Nloga and Jalaya Shaw saw action at ITA Regionals, Saturday on the campus of the University of Florida.
Imbo-Nloga opened the morning for the Wildcats in a singles match against Petja Drame of FIU, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
Shaw followed at noon, fallilng 6-0, 6-1 to Xinyi Nong of Miami.
"I was proud of the way Janet and Jalayah competed this weekend," head coach Chris Wollett said following the weekend. "Even when down, they both were open to changing tactics and strategies, which shows me their willingness to work outside of their comfort zone."
"Being freshmen, we knew almost all of our competitors would have more experience than us and it showed," Wollett continued. "In each of our matches, we faced almost immediate court pressure within the first two or three games. From then on, we were forced to play on the defensive until the last point."
"With two young players, I feel this tournament was a positive experience - it showed us we have a lot of areas that we need to improve on. I hope both players will take this weekend and use it as motivation to work hard and improve going into the spring season."
The Wildcats will regroup and prepare for the spring slate, with the 2024 tennis schedule set to begin on Saturday, Jan. 20 as the Wildcats head to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. to take on UCF. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
