CHAMPS! @BCUdiamoncats Repeat at MEAC With 11-1 Rout Of NSU

Wildcats Win 18th MEAC Title

Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – No long balls, but another overwhelming offensive display and seven quality innings from Donte Lindsay propelled a Bethune-Cookman repeat as Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions as the Wildcats downed Norfolk State 11-1 Saturday at A.W. Perdue Stadium.

The Wildcats (33-23) run-ruled the Spartans (25-22) for the second straight day en route to their second straight title, third in the past four years, fourth in the Jason Beverlin era and 18th in program history.

"This never gets old," said Beverlin, named the tournament's Outstanding Coach. "Just to see the joy on [the players'] faces, that's what makes moments like this so special."

Demetrius Sims went 3-4, scored three runs, and drove in two more; and Jameel Edney and Danny Rodriguez each drove in two to pace Bethune-Cookman's 14-hit performance.

Bethune-Cookman had smacked six home runs in its first two tournament victories, but didn't go yard on Saturday, rather assembling rallies that produced three in the first, four in the second and two in the third that helped the Wildcats take a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Wildcats even scored on a double steal in the sixth that plated Edney, then Nate Sterijevski singled home Kyle Corbin to push Bethune-Cookman's advantage to ten.

After giving up a first-inning run, Lindsay didn't allow a Spartan baserunner past first as he scattered four hits and struck out six.  Primarily a reliever this season, the senior from Cleveland registered just his third win of the season against seven losses.

After Norfolk State took its lead, Edney tied the game when he singled home Sims, then Rodriguez brought Adonois Lao and Edney with a two-run single up the middle that gave Bethune-Cookman a 3-1 lead.

Sims and Austin Garcia posted RBI doubles in the Wildcats' four-run second, then Sims and Lao had RBI singles in the third to make it 9-1.

Rodriguez, who batted .454 (5-11) with three home runs and seven RBI in the three tournament games, was named tournament Outstanding Performer and was joined on the all-tournament team by Garcia, Sims and Anthony Maldonado.
