An outstanding halfback and fullback during his playing days at Bethune-Cookman, Rufus "Buddy" Young also made a distinctive contribution to the Daytona Beach community.The 1954 graduate served on the City Commission for 14 years after an extensive career in education.

A native of Bartow, Young enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served for 4 years.What followed was a career in law enforcement -- first as a Daytona Beach police officer from 1947 to 1953, then as a Volusia County sheriff's deputy from 1953 to 1959.The same year he became a deputy, Young also re-enrolled in Bethune-Cookman where he earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.

In 1956, Young switched from law enforcement to coaching and teaching, and for the next 20 years was a football coach and teacher at several area schools.He also became the athletic director and dean of students and administration at Holly Hill Junior High School in 1976.

Three years later, he joined the Daytona Beach City Commission, where he earned several awards and commendations, including the Shafts of Lights and recognition from NAFEO.

He passed away in 2003.
