Yvonne "Nicky" Scarlett-Golden was a three-year letter winner during her undergraduate days at Bethune-Cookman from 1948-50.
One of Bethune-Cookman's top female student-athletes, she played basketball when women's rules included half court play, but complimented her quick and aggressive play by mastering the two-handed set shot.
After receiving a degree in Physical Education, she went on to earn a Master's degree at Boston University before returning to Bethune-Cookman and receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
After serving as an educator in in California and Florida, Scarlett-Golden embarked on a political career that saw her elected to the Daytona Beach City Council in 1994. In 2003, she became the city's first African-American mayor and only the second female mayor. She was re-elected in 2005.
She died in 2006 after a battle with cancer.
